How many people can fit on the cable car?
The cable car has room for 6 adults or a variation of adults and children. Please note new restrictions detailed on Cable Car Timetable page.
Can I bring my dog onto the island?
Yes, dogs are allowed on the cable car and on the island on the public road only, not the Beara Way, and also must be kept on a leash at all times due to the presence of livestock.
Does the cable car run all year round?
Yes, the cable car runs all year round, weather permitting. It operates continuously back and forth during the allotted opening hours. If the cable car is down for scheduled maintenance, there will be a public service announcement on the front page of this site here.
Can I pre-book tickets for the cable car?
No, the cable car currently operates on a first-come first-served basis.
Are bikes allowed on the cable car?
Bikes are allowed on the cable car at the discretion of the cable car operator.
Are there any hostels or hotels on the island?
No, there are no hostels or hotels on the island. The island has a number of houses for rent and can be found in the Local Accommodation page.
How long does the cable car take to cross?
The cable car takes about 8 minutes in each direction.
Does the cable car have wheelchair access?
The cable car does not currently have dedicated wheelchair access. However, the cable car operator will be happy to assist you in order to try to accommodate you. However, there is no operator on the island side of the cable car system and so boarding may prove more difficult on the island side.
Can I camp on the island?
Yes, it is possible to camp on the island. Please speak to one of the local farmers for permission and advice on where to stay. There is a public water tap on the road in the first village.
How long does it take to walk to the end of the island?
Depending on your walking speed, it will take 4-5 hours to walk to the end of the island and back. Please remember to bring food and water with you as there are no shops on the island. The gradient is easy to moderate on the roads and moderate off the roads.
Is there any public transport to the island?
No, there is no public transport directly to the island. The easiest solution is to get public transport to the nearest main town, Castletownbere, and arrange for a taxi to bring you to the island.
Is there parking at the cable car?
There is a large car parking area on the mainland near the cable car so parking should never be a problem.
Are there public toilets available on the island?
There are public toilets available at the cable car station on the mainland, but unfortunately, there are no public toilets currently on the island.
Can I use my Free Travel Pass on the cable car?
No, the Free Travel Pass cannot currently be used for the cable car.
